Maasai Warrior

Serengeti, Tanzania

Young Maasai warrior. The tribal markings indicate that he has recently been circumcised.   The circumcision is carried out by one of the elders.  There is no pain relief given and the young boys are not able to cry or show any feelings of pain.   To do so would bring shame on their family.  After they are circumcised, they live in the jungle for 6 to 8 months in huts built by their mothers.  They live with other young boys who have been circumcised at the same time as themselves.   There is no barrier or fence erected around their huts in the jungle to emphasize their new roles as warriors/ protectors.   They dress in black throughout this period too.
