The Eilean Glas which was registerd in Stornoway, ran aground while carrying a cargo of salt and was stranded here on 1 May 1980.  All efforts to refloat the coastal trader failed and it was broken up on the spot

Bettystown Beach, County Meath
The Eilean Glas which was registered in Stornoway, ran aground while carrying a cargo of salt and was stranded here on 1 May 1980.  All efforts to refloat the coastal trader failed and it was broken up on the spot. The ship was 19 years old, and weighted 374 tonnes.  It was going from Belfast to Devon and hit the rocks at the mouth of the Boyne estuary.   It had a big hole in its hull.  Here is a link to some shots taken of the ship just before she sank by local photographer Jim Campbell...
