This year, the crowds were down alot on the beach.  We were fortunate to have lovely blue skies, and not a drop of rain.  However it was very windy , with sand blowing everywhere it was difficult to protect our gear.

Laytown Races 2011

9th September 2011.   See some more photos of the races here

Laytown Races occupies a unique position in the Irish Racing Calender as it is the only race event run on a beach under the Rules of Racing.  In addition , it is only one of a couple of sand race meetings run under the official rules of racing in Europe.

Laytown strand races have been in existence for one hundred and forty three years.  The first recorded meeting was in 1868 when races were run on the beach in conjunction with the Boyne Regatta.  It is assumed that the rowing competition took place on the high tide and the racing when the tide receded.

The Laytown meeting is an important cultural event in the Meath calender.  Racing is run at distances between five furlongs and two miles.

It was an enjoyable afternoon on the beach, and good company with fellow photographers, Fran and James.   A day at the races would not be complete without a bag of chips and some fizzy drinks, so we enjoyed some fine dining in the comforts of my lovely car as we watched the sun going on Bettystown Beach ( actually , thats a lie as the sun sets in the west, but what the heck, most people wont read this far anyway  )
